AL candidate Moslem Uddin wins Chattogram-8 by-polls

Shawdesh Desk: Awami League nominated candidate Moslem Uddin Ahmed has been elected in the Jatiya Sangsad by-elections of Chattogram-8 constituency.

Moslem defeated his rival candidate BNP’s Mohammad Abu Sufian by a margin of 69,311 votes bagging 87,246 votes while his nearest rival got 17,935 votes.

Returning Officer (RO) and Chattogram Regional Election Officer Md Hasanuzzaman announced the result from the announcement centre at MA Aziz Stadium Gymnasium on Monday night.
Results of all 170 polling centres have been announced. Moslem bagged 87,246 votes while Sufian got 17,935 votes.

Besides, Bangladesh Nationalist Front Chairman SM Abul Kalam Azad got 524 votes while Syed Md Farid Uddin Ahmed of Islamic Front Bangladesh 427 votes.

Bapon Dasgupta of NAP 304 got votes and independent candidate Mohammad Amdadul Hoque 144 votes.

Some 22.94 percent of 475,996 voters cast their votes in the election, said the RO.

The polling was held peacefully from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Moslem Uddin Ahmed told the reporters that the voters cast their votes peacefully.
BNP candidate demanded postponement of the election alleging that his supporters were driven out by the AL men.

Chatra League, Juba League and outsiders kept the centres under their control since morning, he said.

Returning Officer Md Hasanuzzaman said they took action whenever they received any allegation.

The constituency fell vacant after the lawmaker Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal Executive President Mainuddin Khan Badal had passed away on November 7 last year.
